When doing a massive renovation often people will invest their money into spaces that will give them a good return, kitchens and bathrooms are typically at the top of that list. As you all know we did a major overhaul on our entire house and basically stripped it back to its original bones. When creating the budget for our monster reno we needed to be smart about trying to salvage things that weren’t too dated.

Original Master Bathroom

The master bathroom was one of the areas that had a lot of opportunities to save money. The previous owner had renovated the ensuite about 5 years prior and invested quite a pretty penny into it. It would have been irresponsible and ridiculous of us to completely gut the space. However, the truth is, this space didn’t really jive with the rest of the house design. We had to work in a small amount of money to the budget to revamp the space and give it a more modern, and fresh feel.

The one thing I really didn’t like about the bathroom was the newish steam shower. I mean, I was kind of excited about the idea of inheriting a steam shower…but, on the other hand, I was far from excited about the tile choice the previous owner had picked. I looked into so many options to possibly cover or replace it but the cost to demo and redo the shower was double our entire ensuite budget. I was stuck having to use the shower as the focal point and overall color scheme.

The vanity was also something that needed to be updated. I didn’t want to replace the vanity as it was really well built of solid wood. I removed the center countertop piece and sold the old granite and sinks online. I kept the main bottom piece to the vanity and had our painter spray and paint it light gray. I picked up some utensil storage organizers for the drawers to keep the space clean and organized. I also picked up some inexpensive handles and knobs from Lowe’s and easily replaced the old ones on my own.

Our electricians wired some lighting in the mirror wall that I asked to be centred to the new sinks. I chose an affordable light option that I was able to find on Wayfair and our glass and mirror friend, Rodger, was able to create cutouts for the fixtures so that the lights appear to be coming out of the mirror.

I removed all the old linoleum tiles myself from the space and had our electrician add the in-floor heating. We chose a very affordable, simple, white speckled grey 12×24 porcelain tile for flooring. The tile needed to tie in the busy shower and pull from the grey vanity. This tile wouldn’t be my first choice but it ended up working out nicely and keeping the space simple and bright.

In order to stay on budget, we went with an entry level brilliant white quartz for our countertops. We purchased new undermount bathroom sinks in a square shape to give it a more modern feel. The previous owner had purchased all high-end Grohe bathroom fixtures so we were able to reuse these and they worked out perfectly.

In the end, we were able to stay on budget and the total overhaul for the ensuite renovation came to just under $2500. This space now has a similar flow and feel to the rest of the house and we didn’t have to spend a fortune. Is this my dream bathroom? No, but it’s clean, simple, modern and very functional.
